My studies this week were very light because I’ve been spending more time on other hobbies. I started working on an old story draft that I’d like to get to 50,000 words by the end of the year. I’ve been reading more and bought three new books as a birthday gift to myself.

I have a feeling my studies will also remain on the lower, more casual end next week, as it’s the week of my birthday! 🥳

🥐 French

My French conversation lessons are going really well! I usually cover 2-3 topics per lesson, and this gives me a lot of new phrases and vocabulary. I’ve felt inspired to take the notes my tutor shares at the end of each lesson to use as journal prompts.

I went back to the notes from the trial lesson and used the first few phrases in a journal entry. Even though I haven’t written in a while, writing came quite easily, and completing the journal entry didn’t feel like a chore.

My tutor will be away for the rest of August, so I’ve been unable to book future lessons. This was a bit disappointing as I wanted August to be a speaking-focused month, and I had already booked a 5-lesson package with this tutor.

I’ll be able to book the rest of the lessons once she’s back. Until then, I’m deciding on whether I want to book a new tutor for the rest of the month. If I do, I’ll at least be able to keep up with my weekly speaking practice.

🍜 Japanese

I’m still watching Clannad and enjoying the second season a lot more! I didn’t make time to learn the end song credits from the first season, but I still plan on doing that.

🧧 Mandarin

A short YouTube video in Mandarin on my feed popped up on my feed, and I watched it. The person in the video also spoke Shanghainese. It was interesting to hear the similarities and differences.

Share Study Notepad: Language Studies

Last week I shared a bit about the pressure I was feeling to meet the goals I set out for the 75 Fluent Challenge. Reflecting on my studies in July has led me to take a more relaxed approach to my studies in August.

It’s been nice taking things easy and not thinking about whether I’m hitting the 1-hour minimum. Even still, my average study time was just under an hour a day (0.94 hours).

It feels like I've gained more time to spend on other hobbies. I’ve been reading more books and have started working on writing a novel draft I started many years ago.

This week, I spent more time immersing myself in Japanese and taking conversation lessons with a French tutor. It was a nice balance of just enjoying my target languages.

🥐 French

I am now officially taking weekly conversation lessons in French! In my last lesson, my tutor and I spoke about my hobbies. I got to talk about all the shows and movies I’ve been watching and the games I’ve been playing.

In the past, I’ve always only taken 30-minute lessons, but since I want to be speaking more, I decided to try 45 minutes. It didn’t feel too long or short, and I felt comfortable speaking the whole time.

The structure of the lessons has involved my tutor and me talking. When she notices a word I struggled to say or a pronunciation mistake I made, she notes it down in a Word document. Depending on the word or phrase, we spend a few minutes talking about it and then continue our conversation.

The great thing about a tutor is that you get direct feedback, and one quick moment of correction can help you notice future mistakes.

I like this lesson structure, but I was also wondering if there are other structures used in conversation lessons. Maybe picking a specific topic or debating?

🍜 Japanese

I finished watching the first season of Clannad! Every time the end credits roll and the end song starts playing, I tell myself I’d like to learn it. It’s very simple and includes some useful vocabulary to learn. My partner and I plan on watching the next season together, so I think I’ll make an effort to learn the song.

In excitement for the Trails in the Sky 2nd chapter demo coming out this month, I played a few minutes of the first chapter. With only half an hour of playing, I had some of the dialogue stuck in my head. As much as I want to start reading and understanding more in Japanese, I need to enjoy getting input before getting too ahead of myself.

On average, this month I spent 1.42 hours a day on my target languages. This included one missed study day during the final week of July and two days that were under an hour of study.

When I see this chart, I’m reminded that consistency looks different and even with missed days, progress can still be made.

I mostly spent my time with French, but I did spend some time with Japanese, Mandarin and Icelandic. Let’s recap my language studies in July.

Despite this, I did have some great wins this month. I took my first French lesson in a year and a half and have decided to continue taking weekly lessons from now on.

I completed two French resources, my vocabulary workbook and the pronunciation course, both by French with Dylane.

One of the tasks on my project board for the year is to read Kai Duan (开端)1. I still plan on doing this, but before I get to it, I want to continue rebuilding my vocabulary and get back to a comfortable place in Mandarin.

📅 Plans For August

Since August is the last month before schools start back up and I go back to work, I want to make sure I’m still able to enjoy my time off outside of language learning.

As for 75 Fluent, I’ll still be tracking my language studies until the challenge ends, but if I don’t meet the 1-hour minimum requirement, that’s okay. The first half of the challenge encouraged me to be more consistent with my studies, and I think that was the push I needed at the start.

This study log combines two weeks of study, as I wasn't feeling well last week. I took it as a chance to take a break from my routine. This meant that there were a few days I didn't meet my minimum 1 hour of study time for the 75 Fluent Challenge.

It was a bit disappointing to lose my streak, and I did lose some motivation to continue studying. The break made me reconsider why I'm doing this challenge and putting pressure on myself to meet these goals.

I wonder if it’s the aspect of time-tracking that adds a layer of pressure. I not only have to do whatever study task I choose but also make sure I’m tracking and meeting the minimum time requirement.1

I find myself weighing everything I do and contemplating how much value it’s bringing me. I already do this normally, because it’s how my brain works, but I think after some time, tracking can cause more harm than good in those moments when I can’t meet my goals.

At this point, I’m contemplating whether I should continue with this challenge. It’s now been 6 weeks, which is the halfway point, and I think the joy is no longer there,

Here are my stats and charts, which cover the past two weeks. I didn’t study at all on Monday the 27th and only did a couple of minutes on Tuesday and Wednesday. My average is still an hour a day since there were days when I spent 2 hours or more.

Most of my time was spent with French (8H23M) and Japanese (6H15M). The “Other” languages were Mandarin (13M) and Icelandic (5M).

🥐 French

I completed the vocabulary workbook I’ve been working through. It feels good to be able to move on to the final workbook, which is the listening workbook. Since I’m focusing on speaking, I want to use some of the audio recordings as shadow practice.

About a week and a half ago, I picked up some early-reader books from the library. I plan to read them out loud to practice working on my pronunciation and intonation in French.

Speaking is one thing I’d like to improve, so I’ve also started taking lessons on Italki. I had a trial lesson a few days ago which went well. I liked the tutor I chose and have already booked my next few lessons with her.

I’ve been watching Clannad with my partner, which has made up most of my Japanese study. There were a few episodes where I looked up some new words, and I’m quite happy to say that they’ve stuck with me without having to memorize them. One of those was ヒトデ / 海星 (Starfish).

I’m still finding it hard to get into Japanese. It feels like I have so much to learn, so more study or immersion has to be done before I can start enjoying what I do know. This feeling is what makes me want to step away from diligently tracking and go on to experiencing and finding the joy in the process.

📅 Week 29/53 | Study Log 2026

I had a lot of fun with my language studies this week. Although I didn't complete everything I'd originally planned, I'm really happy with how the week turned out.

I made a lot of progress through several French resources, found a C-drama to start watching in Mandarin, and even watched an episode of anime in Japanese.

My weeks usually start slowly while I'm just trying to reach my one-hour daily target. By the end of the week, I tend to have more free time and energy, so that's when most of my studying gets done.

🥐 French

Making these pie charts each week is always interesting because they reveal patterns I don't always notice while I'm studying. This week, I spent almost twice as much time studying as I did last week, with studying making up nearly half of my French learning time. I only did a small amount of writing and didn't practice speaking, but I was so motivated to make progress through my resources that I kept using them each day.

With all that progress I was making, I finished the Short Stories in French book that I have been slowly working through for over a year. I had hoped to finish Dylane's French pronunciation course, but I still have just under ten lessons remaining.

It's surprisingly easy to lose track of all the language resources I own, so I spent some time updating my Notion resource tracker. Seeing my completion percentages and overall progress motivates me to keep working through them instead of constantly starting something new.

I didn't get to review words in my L'Étranger deck, so that project is on pause for now. But I did make time to start doing research on French Immersion programs in Canada for my self-study project.

I finally found a C-drama, All The Way To The Sun, to watch! I'm not setting any goals to finish it because I know myself. I'm just happy to have a series ready whenever I feel like watching something in Mandarin.

Unfortunately, the subtitles are embedded into the video, so I can't sentence mine or save vocabulary from it. I actually don't mind. It's nice to simply enjoy the show without turning every activity into a study session.

I also made progress in 50 Chinese Coffee Breaks. Writing characters neatly on the lines definitely feels harder than it used to, but it’s been nice getting back into the habit.

I watched a few random YouTube videos as well, and I'm still surprised by how much I understand after taking such a long break. My Migaku vocabulary is now at 2,744 words.

🍜 Japanese

I only spent a little time with Japanese this week, but I watched an episode of a new anime (Clannad) my partner shared with me. I didn’t get to Lesson 3 of my textbook yet, but I’ll aim to complete it soon.

When I started the 75 Fluent Challenge, I planned to focus exclusively on French, and I think that will remain my main focus. This week, though, I decided to add one small activity in both Japanese and Mandarin.

For Japanese, I completed one lesson in my textbook, and for Mandarin, I worked through two exercises in my new 50 Chinese Coffee Breaks book.

Keeping things simple by focusing on just one resource for each language allows me to continue learning (and maintaining them) without spending too much time deciding what to study.

In total, I spent 9 hours studying my target languages this week. My goal is to study for at least one hour each day, following the 75 Fluent Challenge, and anything beyond that is a bonus. Saturday ended up being my biggest study day, with 2 hours and 26 minutes, mainly because I played a video game in French on top of my usual study activities.

This was a heavier study week overall. I made a lot of progress in the French pronunciation course I've been putting off for months, and I'm determined to finish it this week.

I'm also happy with the amount of time I spent writing. Last week, writing made up only 5% of my study time; this week, it increased to nearly 12%. Most of that came from a back-translation exercise where I translated a passage into English and then back into French. I really enjoyed the activity, and I think it will help me develop more natural-sounding French.

One of the highlights of the week was attending the introduction meeting for ’s Self-Study School. The project involves choosing a topic to research in French, preparing a 10-minute presentation, and completing a self-evaluation afterward.

I was a little nervous beforehand since it was my first time meeting everyone, and I wasn't sure what to expect. In the end, there were four of us, and the entire meeting was in French. It allowed me to have meaningful conversations in French, which I find much more enjoyable than simply speaking to myself.

At the moment, I'm leaning toward researching French Immersion programs in Canada. It's a topic that could easily become very broad, so my goal isn't to cover everything. Instead, I want to use this project as an opportunity to learn something new and deepen my understanding.

Because I was spending more time on other activities, I didn't use Migaku quite as much this week, but I still made some progress.

🥐 French

It's been a full week of tracking my language study! The 75 Fluent Challenge is going well, and one goal I've been consistent with is studying for at least one hour every day.

Looking back at my tracked sessions, it's interesting to see how my study time is distributed throughout the week.

One thing that stood out after categorizing each activity was just how much easier it is to accumulate input than output. Listening alone takes up a large portion of my study time (43.6%), while writing and speaking only make up 11% combined.

I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing, as it’s just much easier to get input whether it’s through watching a movie, listening to a podcast or even playing a game.

Instead of forcing myself to write every day or complete five minutes of speaking just to check a box, I think I'd rather focus on making sure I get meaningful output practice over the course of a week. The challenge is supposed to be fun, and I’ve been enjoying trying out different things each day.

This week I watched the movie Monsieur Papa and started playing A Plague Tale: Innocence, a game that was originally developed in French. During my first playthrough, I picked up a few new words:

I was surprised by how many of these I remembered when I looked back at my notebook, especially since I had only written the French words without any English translations. I think remembering the scenes where I heard each word gives me enough context to recall its meaning.

I also read ’s newest article about 20 study sequences to use when you don’t know what to study. Using a spinning wheel, I landed on sequence 18: translation and back-translation.

I translated one of the short stories from a workbook I'm using, and in a few days I plan to translate it back into French without looking at the original. Translating from French to English was fairly straightforward, but I can already tell that translating it back into French will be a great exercise for grammar and output.

The more I think about it, the more I realize this is the type of output activity I enjoy most. It's still challenging, but it feels much more meaningful than forcing myself to write or speak when I don't really have anything to say.

I achieved a lot in June, and I'm excited for my language studies in July, which will be guided by a new language challenge, 75 Fluent.

Mid-Year Check-In

Since we are now at midyear, it’s a good time to check in on the goals I set at the start of the year.

I hadn’t looked at my project board until recently, and I was surprised to see how many goals I’d already completed. One goal that surprised me the most was A4: 10% of total reads for the year in my target languages.

Technically, I can’t mark it as complete until the end of the year, but I was curious what my progress was. So far, 10 of the 32 books I’ve read this year have been in French, which works out to 31%!

The goals I haven’t started yet are still very achievable by the end of the year, as long as I don’t forget about them. The only two that may not be completed are B3 and E2, since they depend on whether I take and pass the JLPT exams.

I finished reading L’Étranger this month!

At the pace I was reading, I wasn’t expecting to finish it yet, but I found some motivation near the end of the month and ended up reading the rest of the book.

Since I'm participating in 75 Fluent, I'm doing a variety of activities every day to learn French. I’m using a lot of different resources, so instead of setting a deadline to finish them, I’m going with the flow.

June marked the end of my Japanese classes. I’m really happy I stuck with them until the end. To finish the course, we had to prepare and deliver a presentation, which became my main project for the month. Now I’m looking forward to returning to independent study.

Happy summer!

The school year has ended, which means my summer break has begun! I now have more time to dedicate to language learning.

🥐 French

The 75 Fluent Challenge officially started yesterday, and I'll be completing it in French. One of the requirements is to track your study time, so I've started using Toggl again. A couple of years ago, I tracked all my studies and visualized them with charts. It’ll be interesting to bring that habit back.

My biggest accomplishment this week was finally finishing L’Étranger. I had only planned to read one chapter, but I ended up reading the final three over the weekend. Reading it intensively was rewarding. This week I got my Migaku vocabulary to 3,155 known words.

I'm also joining a Le Petit Prince book club for the 75 Fluent challenge. Along with reading two chapters each week, I'm answering comprehension questions as a way to get more writing practice. I feel that writing in a target language has to be functional, so I’m hoping this will help me keep the habit.

Since I probably won't learn as much new vocabulary from Le Petit Prince, I'm also thinking about reading Mon mari by Maud Ventura intensively, since I've already read it in English.
