It mostly relates to work. I want to be able to comfortably communicate with the French speaking families in French and understand them completely while also responding in French. I think this is important because people feel more supported when you're able to communicate in their language.
Secondly, since I work at a French school and the aim is to support the students in improving their French language skills, I want to know enough French that I can choose to only use French with the students if I choose to do so. Some of the students are from French speaking families and I've already noticed that it is harder for me to connect with them when I use 90% English and 10% French.
I essentially want to have a type of "work fluency" where I can easily communicate in French as I do in English. The reason in wanting to improve this quickly is so that I can do my job better! I hope that all makes sense haha 😅
Your goals are indeed admirable and make perfect sense. Seeking to communicate effectively in French with families and students at a French school is a commendable objective.
Your mention of "work fluency" is akin to what learners often strive for in programs like English for Specific Purposes (ESP). These programs are tailored to help learners quickly develop proficiency in a second language within their professional or academic contexts. Do they have these classes in French?
Bonne chance avec votre apprentissage du français! (I used DeepL haha)
Would that be like a business English but for French? Because I work in a school I feel like the language I need is just usual every day language. I essentially need to learn everything I know in English, in French. Simple words like "push and pull" or names of a wide range of animals that I may not have ever needed to use in Mandarin I'm having to use in French as they come up a lot in the classroom. It'll take some time but I think I'll get there!
You are doing amazing! Thank you for sharing your journey so far. When you say complete fluency by 2024, how would you define that?
