The cultural aspect is always a big part when learning a language with so many dialects. I felt the same way when I first started learning Cantonese and Mandarin. It can feel rewarding, though, as you learn more, especially if the cultures are different from your own.
Glad to hear someone else's goal is just to have fun with it! I'm working on consistency in Arabic without it becoming too much of a chore.
