It was so helpful when I was sentence mining in Mandarin and wanted real audio from videos/shows I had watched. Now I'm using it for French and I'm enjoying it so far.
I love that your S tier app is not a super well-known one! And your headache tier made me laugh 😁 it's so fun seeing how everyone learns differently, but I found myself agreeing with a lot of the apps you shared! 😊
So many apps! I haven't used most of them, but with ones I did I think I agree with the ranking. Duolingo is quite annoying, LingQ is a bit daunting, Memrise is ok, Italki and Anki are good. And thanks for nudging me to do my own tier list. I'll do one, but i'll probably be dominated by methods (Pimsleur, Assimil, M. Thomas) rather than apps.
My app list was a lot smaller when I was just learning Mandarin! Since learning more languages the list has grown since some apps are just for one language.
What do you mean when you say LingQ is daunting? It's been a couple years since I've last used it so my ranking was based on my last experience with it.
I had a few more apps to include but I didn't include the ones I felt were more like "courses". I'd be interested in seeing your list even if it includes methods!
It is a bit expensive, but I got a deal they were offering at the end of the year for studying one language only. I use Cantonese as the base language and Vietnamese as the target language. I’m just doing the listening component and I’m not doing any reviews yet because that would be too overwhelming. I mainly listen when I’m walking outside.
Not many apps/courses offer Cantonese so I can see how it would be a great investment! If I ever get into listening methods, I may give it a try for Cantonese.
This was very helpful. The only app on your list that I’ve tried is Duolingo and I gave up on that over a year ago. (I didn’t like their latest update.) I have tried Babbel but I wasn’t consistent enough to justify a subscription. Still, I enjoyed that app when I used it. I found the lessons more interesting (and sensible) than Duolingo. I’ve also used Rosetta Stone. In fact, I have a lifetime subscription but many of the early lessons were slow and tedious for me. It’s been so long since I studied, I probably should give it another try.
I’m currently using Rosetta Stone. There are a few frustrating issues with it but overall I like it. Duolingo is the only other app I’ve used. I’ll have to check out why it’s at the bottom for you.
DAMN! Duolingo at the BOTTOM? I'm going to need tobscoir your content and look into some other language learning resources. Oof.
I've got a post about my experience with duolingo. It may explain why it's at the bottom for me. 😅
*to scour*
Omg I’ve never even heard of language player, trying it out immediately!!! I do plan to do one of these too 👀
I briefly mentioned it in this post: studynotepad.substack.com/i/124173263/language-player and I'll likely have a post dedicated to it in the future.

Looking forward to seeing your tier list!

Thank you! I think if we all honsestly shared our S tier apps they would all be different since we all learn differently! 😊

I’ve been really enjoying Glossika recently. It’s been really helpful for my Vietnamese listening/
I've yet to try Glossika. I'm glad you're finding it helpful! The best app is the app we find beneficial.
