When I'm listening to Taiwanese speakers of Mandarin my comprehension is super high (since I grew up around Taiwanese-accented Mandarin), but when my friends with thicker accents from around China speak Mandarin, I have to work a lot harder to figure out what's going on.

Yes! It'll be difficult at first but exposing yourself to different accents can make them easier to understand overtime.
